Title
Aesthetic influence of implant-supported abutment materials on peri-implant soft tissues: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
The present study aims to provide a systematic review of the literature investigating the influence of the different materials for implant-supported abutments (i.e., titanium, gold or pink anodized titanium, zirconia and gold) on the esthetic outcomes of the implant-supported restorations, as objectively measured by spectrophotometry of the discoloration of the soft tissues (considering the color differential with natural tissues ΔE).
Study Type Included
RCT
Condition Being Studied
The success of dental implants not only depends on the osseointegration of the implant, but also on the functional performance and the biological integration of the prosthetic components, especially in the anterior zone. The present study aims to provide a systematic review of the literature investigating the influence of the different materials for implant-supported abutments on the esthetic outcomes of the implant-supported restorations.
Participant
Inclusion : adult patients without systemic pathologies receiving a single unit dental implant to treat unitary edentulism. Exclusion : complete edentulousness, zygomatic implants, mini implants, multiple unit implant supported restorations.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Assessment of objective peri-implant soft tissue discoloration induced by the abutment material measuring the color difference between natural and peri-implant soft tissues (ΔE) with spectrophotometry fo single unit screw-retained or cemented implant-supported prosthesis. Comparison of different materials for the implant-supported abutment surface : titanium, gold or pink anodized titanium, zirconia, gold, alumina, nitrided titanium.
Comparator Control
Titanium abutments
Main Outcome
Assessment of objective peri-implant soft tissue discoloration induced by the abutment material measuring the color difference between natural and peri-implant soft tissues (ΔE) with spectrophotometry. Measures of effect Mean difference
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Evaluation of the influence of soft tissue thickness on the ΔE parameter, thereby on the visibility of implant supported abutment through the peri implant tissues. Measures of effect Mean difference
Study Method
Meta-analysis, Systematic review
