- DOACs stands for Direct Oral Anticoagulants. These are a class of anticoagulant medications that are administered orally. Unlike traditional anticoagulants such as warfarin, DOACs directly target specific clotting factors, providing a more direct and predictable effect. The main types of DOACs include: Dabigatran (Pradaxa): Inhibits thrombin (Factor IIa). Rivaroxaban (Xarelto): Inhibits Factor Xa. Apixaban (Eliquis): Also inhibits Factor Xa. Edoxaban (Savaysa): Another Factor Xa inhibitor. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is a type of anticoagulant medication that is derived from unfractionated heparin (UFH). Heparin is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, and it works by enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, a natural anticoagulant. LMWH is produced by breaking down heparin into smaller fragments, resulting in molecules with a lower molecular weight.
