Title
Efficacy and Safety of Terbutaline vs. Epinephrine for Treating Pediatric Asthma in Emergency: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Review Question
What is the comparative efficacy and safety of terbutaline compared to epinephrine in the treatment of pediatric asthma in emergency settings,
Study Type Included
Randomized Controlled Trials
Condition Being Studied
The domain being studied in the research is the treatment of pediatric asthma, specifically comparing the effectiveness and safety of epinephrine (Epi) and terbutaline for this condition.
Participant
Inclusion: children and adolescents aged 18 years and under with acute asthma exacerbation in emergency settings. Exclusion: Adults >18 years of age
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Terbutaline is a medication commonly used to treat asthma. It belongs to a class of drugs known as beta-2 adrenergic agonists, which help to relax the airway muscles and alleviate symptoms of asthma, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. In the context of your study, terbutaline is the primary treatment under investigation.
Comparator Control
While Epinephrine is another medication used in emergency situations to treat severe asthma exacerbations. It also acts on the airway muscles, dilating them and improving airflow. In your study, epinephrine is the reference or control treatment used to compare its efficacy and safety with terbutaline in treating pediatric asthma. Our study aims to compare how well terbutaline works in treating pediatric asthma in emergency situations compared to epinephrine, with a focus on both the effectiveness of symptom relief and the safety of these treatments in the pediatric population.
Main Outcome
The main outcomes of our study are 1. Safety and Efficacy of Terbutaline vs Epinephrine in Emergency Settings 2. Hospitalization 3. Length of stay in the emergency department greater than 24 hours 4. The need for intubation 5. Moratlity Measures of effect Mean differences in 95% CI's, percentages
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Secondary Outcomes: Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) Forced Expiratory Volume in the First Second (FEV1) Heart Rate Length of Stay (other than greater than 24 hours, which is part of the primary outcome) Respiratory Rate Oxygen Saturation pH PCO2 (Partial Pressure of Carbon Dioxide) Lactate levels Occurrence of Adverse Events
