Title
Corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma: Is there a clinically relevant difference? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Review Question
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to quantify and compare the clinical effectiveness of intra-articular corticosteroids (CS), hyaluronic acid (HA), and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients in terms of patient-reported outcome measures and Minimal Clinically Important Difference (MCID).
Study Type Included
The following inclusion criteria were used: RCTs, written in English language and with no time limitation, on intra-articular injections of CSs, HA, and PRP for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
Condition Being Studied
Knee osteoarthritis
Participant
Males and females with no age limitation affected by knee osteoarthritis
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Intra-articular knee injection of corticosteroids
Comparator Control
Intra-articular knee injection of hyaluronic acid or PRP
Main Outcome
The primary outcome of this meta-analysis was the overall Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score at mid-term follow-up (>3 months and ≤6 months).
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Secondary outcomes were overall WOMAC score very short- (≤6 weeks), short- (>6 weeks and ≤3 months), and long-term (>6 months and ≤12 months) follow-ups and pain measured on the visual analogue scale (VAS) at very short- (≤6 weeks), short- (>6 weeks and ≤3 months), mid- (>3 months and ≤6 months) and long-term (>6 months and ≤12 months) follow-ups.
Study Method
Meta-analysis, Systematic review
