- Title
- Effectiveness of intravesical instillation for overactive bladder including bladder pain syndrome.
- Review Question
- Does intravesical instillation affect urinary symptoms, urinary frequency, pain, infections, or health related quality of life in patients with overactive bladder?
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled studies (RCT).
- Condition Being Studied
- Overactive bladder is a condition that is characterized by frequent and sudden urge to urinate that is difficult to control. The condition often involves a urinary frequency of more than eight times per 24h and more than 2 wake ups during night. Overactive bladder contains a cluster of diagnoses which include patients with recurring or chronic cystitis, bladder pain syndrome, radiation induced cystitis and chemical cystitis. Intravesical instillations are used to manage an overactive bladder if other treatments, such as behavioral strategies, medication or botox injections, have not succeeded in giving an acceptable effect.
- Participant
- Patients with overactive bladder. We include: - Recurring cystitis - Chronic cystitis - Bladder pain syndrome / Interstitial cystitis - Radiation Induced Cystitis - Chemical Cystitis
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Intravesical instillation with: a. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) b. Newer substances (product namnes): - sodium hylauronic acid + sodium chondroitin sulfate (iAluRil) - sodium chondroitin sulfate (Gepan Instill & Uracyst) - hyaluronic acid (Hyacyst & Biocyst & Instylan) c. Polihexanid (UroTainer) d. AgCl e. Chlorhexidine
- Comparator Control
- Placebo, no treatment, or other defined treatment.
- Main Outcome
- - urinary frequency - pain - infections - health related quality of life - subjective symptom measures (combining for example frequency, nocturia and pain) Measures of effect For dichotomous outcomes: Relative risk, odds ratio, risk difference For continuous outcomes: mean difference, standardized mean difference.
