- Title
- Medications and food interfering with the bioavailability of levothyroxine: a systematic review
- Review Question
- Which medications, food or beverages can interfere with the bioavailability of levothyroxine?
- Study Type Included
- The study should be conducted on human beings. There is no additional restrictions on the types of study.
- Condition Being Studied
- Levothyroxine. Drugs interactions. Malabsorption.
- Participant
- Inclusion: hypothyroid patients or healthy volunteers who take levothyroxines.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Any drugs, food, or beverages impairing the bioavailability of levothyroxine. Drugs, food or beverages should be ingested concomitantly with levothyroxine. Examples include calcium and iron supplements, proton pump inhibitors, H2 antagonists, basic antacids, statins, phosphate binders, bile acid sequestrants, sex hormone, protease inhibitors, coffee, milk, fiber-rich diet, etc.
- Comparator Control
- Both pre-post self-control (with and without the interfering drugs in the same group of participants) and placebo are accepted.
- Main Outcome
- Serum TSH Measures of effect Serum TSH levels are measured by laboratory tests.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Serum thyroid hormones levels (T3, and T4), or daily levothyroxine dose, or the results of levothyroxine absorption test (area under the curve and the T4 maximum concentration) Measures of effect Serum T3 and T4 levels are measured by laboratory tests. Daily levothyroxine doses are acquired from hospital information systems or local databases. Levothyroxine absorption test: participants take a certain dose of levothyroxine on empty stomach and have their thyroid hormone levels tested for at least 6 hours. The area under the curve and the T4 maximum concentration can be calculated from the pharmacokinetic profiles.
