- Review Question
- Is ozonated water as a mouthwash effective in reducing gingivitis in patients with Diabetes Mellitus of age group 40-60years as compared to oil pulling with virgin coconut oil?
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled clinical trials will be included in which ozone either in the form of water, gas, gel has been used to study reduction of gingivitis in patients with Diabetes Mellitus.
- Condition Being Studied
- Diabetes Mellitus is one of the commonest metabolic disorders affecting the human body where the elevated glucose levels lead to the outbreak and progression of gingivitis, periodontitis and eventually alveolar bone loss. The most recommended method to maintain optimum oral hygiene is tooth brushing. Along with toothbrushing, a mechanical method, several chemical methods are also recommended. Oil pulling is the traditional Indian practice to prevent many oral and gingival disorders. Ozone, a trioxygen, a naturally occurring gas, has ample medicinal properties. Ozone has some unique properties of being bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, immune modulatory, haemostatic, disinfection, wound healing, anti-inflammatory and analgesic to name a few and hence has found a wide application in dentistry. The prevalence of gingivitis is more in case of predisposing factors like Diabetes Mellitus. Ozone or ozonated water in such cases has a cutting edge over other chemical methods due to its broad anti-microbial property combined with lower toxicity. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of ozonated water to reduce gingivitis in diabetic patients along with simple oral care hygiene methods as well as compare this therapy with oil pulling method with virgin coconut oil.
