Review Question
This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the effects of supplementation with ALA on cardiovascular risk factors (i.e. inflammatory markers, blood pressure, and blood lipid profile) in individuals with obesity or overweight.
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials with parallel or crossover design.
Condition Being Studied
Overweight or obesity
Participant
Individuals with obesity or overweight, excluded if participants pregnant women and nursing mothers and enteral or parenteral feeding.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Dietary supplementation with ALA (including using flaxseed oil, chia seed, linseed, canola, rapeseed, walnut, perilla seed, or their derivates as sources of ALA).
Comparator Control
Placebo or control group.
Main Outcome
Primary outcomes of interest will be inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor), blood pressure, and blood lipid profile (triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). Measures of effect Mean change and SD of outcomes of interest.
