- Title
- The effect of Beetroot juice (BRJ) supplementation on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD): A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- The effect of Beetroot juice on the creatine kinase (CK) levels (IU/L), interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (pg/ml), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), counter movement jump (CMJ) and pressure pain threshold (PPT) on athletic adults (≥ 18 years) in comparison to placebo groups
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials
- Condition Being Studied
- The athletes with exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), inflammatory biomarkers, muscle function and muscle soreness were included.
- Participant
- Studies will be selected by applying the following Population- Intervention-Comparator-Outcome-Study design (PICOS) and they will be included if they meet the following criteria: (1) randomized controlled clinical trials, (2) studies on athletic adults (≥ 18 years), (3) original studies examining a short- or long-term BRJ supplementation intervention, (4) absence of serious methodological flaws (e.g., PLA control not present, participant not blinded, inappropriate statistical analysis procedures) and (5) controlled studies that provided the required data to calculate the effect sizes, including the means and standard deviations (SDs) of Creatine kinase (CK), C-reactive protein (CRP), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), Countermovement jump (CMJ) and Pressure pain threshold (PPT) for both intervention and control groups. Studies will be excluded if they will be: (1) trials without control group, (2) ecological studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses, (3) used BRJ in combination with other nutrients or dietary supplements. After the primary search, all recorded articles founded from the electronic search were entered into endnote software (version X9.3.3) for screening.
