- The effects of khat (Catha edulis) use on the genitourinary system: A systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- How does khat consumption affect the genitourinary system in men in terms of LUTS, seminal factors such as Sperm motility, form, count, and volume? How does khat consumption affect the genitourinary system in women? How does khat consumption affect the genitourinary system in pregnant women in terms of congenital anomalies, birth weight, and stillbirth?
- Study Type Included
- Case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies assessing the effects of khat on the genitourinary system were eligible to be included in our study.
- Condition Being Studied
- Khat, an evergreen plant celebrated for its potent psychostimulant properties, finds its main mode of consumption through the habitual chewing of its fresh green leaves and buds, often extending over multiple daily sessions The complex array of effects on both the human body and society as a whole underscores the importance of comprehending and addressing substance abuse across its various forms. The objective of the current study is to conduct a meta-analysis of the existing literature concerning the potential impact of khat on the reproductive systems.
- Participant
- Inclusion and exclusion criteria Case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies assessing the effects of khat on the genitourinary system with the following criteria were eligible to be included in our study: • Only on the genitourinary or urological system • Studies in the English language • Human studies • Available full text Studies that didn’t fulfill the inclusion criteria were excluded. Two researchers independently selected the studies, and any disagreements were solved by the third researcher.

- Main Outcome
- The main outcome was the effects of khat on the genitourinary system. Measures of effect Comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) statistical software version 2 was admired for this study. Cochran’s test (the significance level was considered less than 0.1) and I² statistics (the significant level was considered more than 50%) were obtained to determine the heterogeneity of the results. Random-effect model was also used when heterogeneity was significant; otherwise, a fixed-effect model was applied. Odds ratio (OR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used for pooled analysis. Sensitivity analysis was used to detect the source of heterogeneity. Due to the high heterogeneity in the results of meta-analysis, power analysis was used to estimate the power of effect sizes.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- congenital malformation Measures of effect The other outcome was the effects of khat on stillbirth and congenital anomalies in women.
