- Title
- The Efficacy of Eriobotrya japonica for the Treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Preclinical Studies
- Review Question
- Could Eriobotrya japonica administration slow the progression of diabetes in an in vivo rodent model? Context and rationale Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Additionally, it results in microvascular and macrovascular problems that are extremely painful for both patients and nursing staff, straining the healthcare system to its breaking point. Despite the increasing awareness of the risk factors for diabetes, the global prevalence and incidence are increasing. Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) belongs to the Rosaceae family and is a perennial fruit that has been utilized as a well-known and longstanding botanical medicine in China. It has been reported that Eriobotrya japonica are widely used in the treatment of skin diseases, coughs, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. So far, there has been a dearth of clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of Eriobotrya japonica in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Therefore, a meticulous review of animal studies could furnish definitive proof for forthcoming clinical trials.
