- Title
- A network meta-analysis on the comparative efficacy of the different types of nuts on gut microbiome composition and gut function in adults
- Review Question
- What is the effect of the different types of nuts (almond, hazelnut, macadamia, pistachio, walnut, pecan, pine nut, Brazil nut, cashew, peanut) on gut microbiota composition in adults?
- Study Type Included
- Clinical controlled trials with parallel or crossover design that used at least one type of nut as intervention for at least a week. In the case of crossover trials, only those with a washout period will be eligible.
- Condition Being Studied
- We are investigating the effect of the different types of nuts on the composition of gut microbiota, and gut function and symptoms in adults.
- Participant
- Inclusion: adults (≥18 years) Exclusion: trials conducted in population <18 years
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inclusion: all intervention trials (with at least 1-week length) that included at least one type of nut (almond, hazelnut, macadamia, pistachio, walnut, pecan, pine nut, Brazil nut, cashew, peanut) in comparison to a control/placebo/non-intervention. Different types of whole nut processing are eligible (e.g. chop, ground, butter, with/without skin). Exclusion: trials that used nuts combined with other interventions that preclude the assessment of the effect of nut consumption alone; trials that did not assess the effects of whole nuts (e.g. oils or extracts)
- Comparator Control
- Controls or placebos without the consumption of nuts; different types of nuts.
- Main Outcome
- Between-group differences in the following markers at the end of the intervention: - global microbiome composition - alpha-diversity of faecal microbiota - beta-diversity of faecal microbiota - Bifidobacterium spp - Lactobacillus spp - Roseburia spp - Akkermansia municiphila - Eubacterium hallii - Eubacterium rectale - Faecalibacterium prausnitzii - Ruminococcus bromii Measures of effect Outcomes related to the gut microbiome as assessed by all relevant measurement methods will be included.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- The following between-group differences at the end of the intervention will be analysed as ‘exploratory outcomes’: - Faecal or plasma short chain fatty acids; - Gastrointestinal symptoms; - Stool frequency and consistency; - Differences in bacterial taxa (not previously specified as secondary outcomes); - Faecal metabolites; - Urine metabolites; - Serum/plasma metabolites.
