Title
EFFICACY OF VISCUM ALBUM IN THE TREATMENT OF SQUAMOUS OR BASAL CELL CARCINOMA IN DOGS - PROTOCOL OF A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
Review Question
To define the investigation questions, it was considered the PICO acronymous, as follow: - Participants – dogs with squamous or basal cell carcinoma (SCC/BCC); - Intervention – adjuvant treatment with Viscum album; - Comparator – control group or no treatment, conventional chemotherapy; - Outcome – response rate (complete or partial remission, stable disease or disease in progression), and rate and time of survival. The question will be “the use of Viscum album as adjuvant in the treatment of SCC/BCC in dogs improves the response rate and/or the survival time?" Context and rationale In humans, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common non-melanoma skin cancer after basal cell carcinoma. SCC accounts for 20% of cutaneous malignancies and about 75% of all deaths due to skin cancer, excluding melanoma. Its incidence rate is constantly increasing, mainly due to population aging. In pets, Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is defined as a relatively common malignant neoplasm, accounting for 5% of all skin tumors. It is considered the second most common oral cancer type (31%) in dogs and cats. Cancer chemotherapy in dogs has traditionally involved administration of chemotherapy agents at the maximum tolerated dose. Cytotoxic chemotherapy has an acceptably low risk of serious toxicity, but an obligatory rest period must be included to allow for recovery of drug-sensitive normal cell populations. This rest period can also allow significant recovery of tumor cells. The traditional chemotherapy present side effects that can impair the patients life quality. Among the various properties of the Viscum album plant, the most outstanding are anticancer, cardiotonic, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and immunomodulatory activities It is expected that Viscum album induces apoptosis and shows immunomodulatory and cytotoxic activity after administration in patients. Extract of Viscum album is one of the most used integrative therapy against cancer in Central Europe. In the world, approximately half of the patients with cancer use complementary therapies, such as Viscum album, so the results obtained with animals may be extrapoled to humans.
