Review Question
Are natural products effective in treating or preventing radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis and improving the acceptability of radiotherapy to patients? P: Head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy without oral mucositis or head and neck cancer patients with oral mucositis after radiotherapy. I: natural products C: placebo, no treatment or active drug control O: oral mucositis data, e.g. incidence of oral mucositis, incidence of severe oral mucositis, onset of oral mucositis, time to resolution, reduction in severity of mucositis, proportion of patients with treatment discontinuation
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials in humans
Condition Being Studied
Radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis
Participant
Head and neck cancer patients without oral mucositis who require radiotherapy, or head and neck cancer patients with oral mucositis diagnosed after radiotherapy.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Treatment with natural products (e.g. honey, curcumin, aloe vera and other plant extracts, Chinese herbal products).
Comparator Control
Placebo, untreated and active drug groups.
Main Outcome
The primary outcomes are data on the degree of oral mucositis induced by radiotherapy using natural products, for example the incidence and severity of oral mucositis.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
