Review Question
Does Liquorice have the potential to influence the activities in oral cavity , thus bringing down the level of dental caries, gingivitis, oral ulcers and mucositis?
Study Type Included
All published articles of Clinical trials and in-vivo studies investigating the effect of liquorice extract on both men and women between the age of 3-55 years with the history of high dental caries, initial enamel lesion, moderate gingivitis, children receiving orthodontic treatment and ulcers are included for this study. All english articles published between the year 2017-2023 are taken into consideration.

Participant
Population – Patients of age 3-55 years with high caries risk, undergoing removable orthodontic treatment, patients with minimal enamel caries with 16 or more teeth in dentition, and with moderate gingivitis were included in this analysis and patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and head & neck cancer were included in this analysis.

Intervention
Intervention – 1% , 2% and 16% of liquorice mouthwash, liquorice lozenges, lollipops containing liquorice extracts, liquorice containing diphenhydramine solution were intervened separately to analyse the outcome on oral health status and disease condition.
Comparator Control
Comparison – 0.2% of chlrohexidine mouthwash, saline and control group receiving counselling on maintaining oral health were taken as comparison groups to assess the intervention
Main Outcome
Outcome – Active reduction in streptococcus mutans level which is the key organism responsible for dental caries, significant remineralisation property and reduction of gingival and plaque index were noted after the oral cavity has been exposed to the various forms of liquorice extract.
