Title
Effect of Garcinia mangostana extract on blood glucoses and other parameters in diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
Does Garcinia mangostana extract reduce the blood glucose level in diabetic mice and rat models? Context and rationale Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic syndrome and endocrinopathy. The number of diabetic mellitus patients has rapidly increased in recent years. DM is a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels. Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar is an effect of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus that leads to damage in many organs (retinopathy, neuropathy, neuropathy, blood vessels, cardiac problems) and activates oxidative stress in cell membranes by producing reactive oxygen species. Therefore, plant preparations contain antioxidants and hypoglycemic properties which would be as an ingredient in diabetic treatment. Garcinia mangostana, known as mangosteen has many biological activities. Previous evidence has suggested that the anti-diabetic effect of Garcinica mangostana extract in in vitro models. However, a limited of number of clinical studies have been conducted on individual with diabetes mellitus. A single dose (2, 175 mg/day) of Garcinia mangostana extract for 90 days in patient with type 2 DM did not reduce fasting blood glucose levels compared with control group. In high risk cardiovascular patients, there was no difference in fasting blood glucose for a group given 2, 520 mg/day Garcinia mangostana Linn extracts. Reduction in blood glucose was found in obese human subjects supplemented with Merastin (Sphaeranthus indicus flower heads and Garcinia mangostana fruit rinds). These inconsistencies are due to the limited number of subjects and the differences in the study design among clinical trials. Therefore, data analysis from previously published researches will be conducted to evaluate the effect of Garcinia mangostana extract on diabetic mice and rat models in this study.
