Review Question
What are the effects of ashwagandha on mental illness?
Study Type Included
Published and unpublished randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or cross-over trials. Without other restrictions.
Condition Being Studied
Any mental disorders, including schizophrenia and psychotic spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Participant
People of any age (i.e., both adults and children) suffering from any mental disorder. These disorders have to be defined according to standard operational diagnostic criteria (DSM or ICD, possibly updated to their latest versions).

Intervention
Withania, also known as "Withania Somnifera" or "Ashwagandha", is a perennial herbaceous plant, belonging to the "Solanaceae". The plant's active constituents are reported to have an antioxidant activity which may contribute at least in part to the antistress, immunomodulatory, cognition facilitating, anxiolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Ashwagandha is generally administered orally.
Comparator Control
Placebo or treatment as usual. When multiple comparators are provided, we prefer to consider as controls the Placebo group.
Main Outcome
The primary outcome will be the difference in pre-post treatment changes in the level of psychiatry disease's symptoms, measured with any validated tool.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Pre-post treatment changes in cognition and sleep.
