- Title
- Unfermented Tea (Camellia sinensis) and Its Components on Age, Stress, or Fatigue-Related Cognitive Decline or Dementia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.
- Review Question
- Can unfermented tea like green tea or matcha green tea and their components, including catechins, theanine, caffeine, and so on, have beneficial effects on the age or stress related cognitive decline and dementia?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Randomized controlled trials Exclusion criteria: cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analysis, etc.
- Condition Being Studied
- Dementia is a growing severe problem among the world, especially in elderly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 55 million people were having dementia in 2020. The amount was expected to grow to 139 million people in 2050. In Taiwan, the prevalence of dementia in people older than 65 was 7.86%. Dementia is related to a series of cognitive function decline, including attention, memory, executive function, reaction time, and so on. Mild cognitive impairment is developed from preclinical change and later turned into mild, moderate, severe dementia. The more severe of dementia can cause huge impact on the quality of life of patients. It’s important to have early intervention to slow down the progression of dementia. However, there are no effective treatment to stop or cure dementia. Cognitive function decline happened because of aging, stress, and fatigue. Many studies are focusing on the dietary factors to achieve the prevention or as the adjuvant treatments. Green tea, matcha tea, and other unfermented tea contain a lot of beneficial components and many studies found it and its components are effective on the improvement of cognitive function decline related to aging, stress, and fatigue.
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: Patients with aging, stress, fatigue related cognitive decline or dementia Exclusion criteria: Children and teenagers
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: Unfermented tea derived from Camellia sinensis such as green tea and matcha (drink, powder, capsule), or tea extracts such as catechins, theanine, and caffeine as the intervention. Exclusion criteria: 1. Not oral intake through drinking and taking capsules. 2. Combined use of other interventional substances, drugs, treatments, etc.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: Placebo, non-tea beverages, liquids with similar texture and smell to tea as the control group, etc. Exclusion criteria: None.
- Main Outcome
- Differences in cognitive function tests score (including overall cognitive function, attention, memory, executive function, reaction time, and so on) between groups. Measures of effect Standardized mean difference (SMD) or mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) would be used to measures the effect in continuous outcomes. Odds ratio (OR) or Risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) would be used for binary data.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Differences in cognitive function tests score within groups. Subgroup analysis of the cognitive function test. Dementia or cognitive function related biochemical data.
