To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion for alopecia areata
Study Type Included
Randomized Controlled Trial
Condition Being Studied
To identify, critically appraise and summarize all randomized controlled trials, and to assess the effectiveness and safety of moxibustion for alopecia areata.
Participant
Inclusion: Adults with alopecia areata (as diagnosed using any recognised diagnostic criteria). Exclusion: Adolescents (under 18 years of age) and elderly people (over 70).

Intervention
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese method of acupuncture treatment, which utilizes the heat generated by burning herbal preparations containing the plant Artemisia vulgaris (it is also called Mugwort or Moxa; the latter is derived fromthe Japanese moe kusa which means burning herb) to stimulate the acupuncture points. the intervention group included patients undergoing therapy with any form of moxibustion (e.g. moxibustion alone, indirect moxibustion, heat-sensitive moxibustion, moxa burner moxibustion, warm needling or thunder fire moxibustion, etc.) as monotherapy or combination therapy.
Comparator Control
The intervention in the control group may include no treatment, placebo moxibustion, western medicine, Oral or external use of Chinese medicine, or other TCM therapies(including fire needle, plum-blossom needle, and acupuncture, etc). The control group and treatment group received inconsistent concomitant treatment, and these trials will not be included.
Main Outcome
1. The effective rate: Number of patients with clinically significant hair regrowth or hair score recovery as rated by the participant or medical practitioner. A complete response was defined as 100% hair regrowth. A good or complete response was defined as 50%-100% hair regrowth. A partial or complete response was defined as 30%-100% hair regrowth. 2. The recurrence rate.

1. Quality of life: Assessed using validated question naires. 2. Incidence of any adverse events.
