- Title
- The efficacy and safety of Ginkgo biloba extract combined with ACEI/ARB on diabetic nephropathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- To examine the efficacy and safety of Ginkgo biloba extract in treating diabetic nephropathy.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
- Condition Being Studied
- Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most severe complications of diabetes and is a primary cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. It is characterized by hyperfiltration and albuminuria in the early phase which is followed by progressive renal function decline, renal tubular epithelial cell hypertrophy, and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. The consequences of diabetic nephropathy extend beyond the kidneys, escalating the chances of cardiovascular diseases, nerve damage, and vision problems. This cascade of complications not only diminishes the quality of life but also places a considerable burden on healthcare systems. Therefore, it is very important to explore the prevention and treatment of diabetic nephropathy.
- Participant
- Patients meeting the diagnostic criteria for diabetic nephropathy, at least 18 years old. There are no age, race, or gender restrictions.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Intervention included Ginkgo biloba extract, with no limit to dosage form, frequency and dosage.
- Comparator Control
- The control group received basic treatment plus ACEI/ARB. The experimental group received Ginkgo biloba extract on the basis of the control group. Basic treatment included measures such as dietary intervention, glycemic control, blood pressure management, lipid lowering and maintaining electrolyte balance, and the basic treatment was consistent between the two groups.
- Main Outcome
- Kidney disease progression (doubling serum creatinine); Cardiovascular events (heart failure, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death)
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Renal function index: Urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER), Serum creatinine (SCr), Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), Cystatin C (Cys-C), Urinary β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), 24-hour urinary protein quantification (24UTP) Glucose metabolism index: Fasting blood glucose (FBG), Two-hour Postprandial glucose (2hPG), Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) Lipid metabolism index: Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) Blood pressure: Diastolic pressure(DP), Systolic Pressure(SP) Oxidative stress: Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Advanced oxidation protein product (AOPP) Inflammatory factors: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) Hemorheology indicators: Whole blood viscosity, Plasma viscosity, Fibrinogen, Hematocrit Safety Outcomes: Any adverse events that occurred during the study
