- Condition Being Studied
- One of the most important risk factors for coronary heart disease is hypertension (HTN) that can reticently breakdown blood vessels, heart, brain and kidneys. The risk of cardiovascular disease increase as blood pressure rises to 115/75. It is appraised that 3.5 billion people among adult population have non-optimal systolic blood pressure (BP) levels (i.e., >110-115), and 874 million adults have a systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg. Hence, around 25% of adults have HTN. The prevalence of HTN is increasing globally so that there will be 1.5 billion hypertensive patients in the world by 2025. According to the American heart association, about 16.5% of the global mortality can be credited to hypertension, of which 45% are caused by coronary heart disease. Most of these disorders are not curable and the current therapeutic strategies only aim at disease control. But even a small decrease in the systolic and diastolic blood pressures (e.g., 2–5 mmHg) cause a dramatic reduction in the hypertension complications like stroke and coronary heart disease. Thus, there is a rising trend towards using herbal medicine in health care generally and cardiovascular medicine.
