Title
Auricular acupressure for constipation. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials and meta-analysis.
Review Question
For constipation patients, is auricular points embedding treatment as effective or more effective in alleviating constipation severity, improving the patient's mental state and quality of life compared with existing treatments? For constipation patients, does auricular points embedding treatment bring greater risk compared with existing treatments?
Study Type Included
We only include randomized controlled trials. Quasi randomized controlled trials (CCT) or trials with no control groups will not be included.
Condition Being Studied
Constipation is a very frequently encountered complication in patients with stroke. Constipation may restricts patients' social activities, reduce their quality of life, lead to bad mental state and contribute to a poor outcome. For constipation, western medicine uses lifestyle changes, medication, psychotherapy, biofeedback therapy or surgery.
Participant
The target population of this systematic review includes adult constipation patients of different genders and races. We will include patients with both functional constipation and constipation caused by other diseaeses.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Auricular acupressure (AA) is a major integral part of CAM. It has been described as a technique that involves Semen vaccariae (wang bu liu xing) seeds, Semen raphani (lai fu) seeds, Semen sinapis Albae (bai jie) seeds, or magnetic pellets with an adhesive tape on certain acupuncture points of the ears. AA was considered a type of microacupuncture that may have beneficial effects on the holistic human system [9]. Thus, therapeutic effects were achieved by stimulating specific acupuncture points in the ear that were connected to specific organs or systems of the body.
Comparator Control
Based on the requirements set by STRICTA checklist for the control group of acupuncture clinical studies, the control measures in this guide include 1 sham moxibustion(placebo moxibustion), 2 standard nursing, 3 no intervention, 4 oral western medicine, 5 biofeedback therapy, 6 dietary modification, 7 psychotherapy, 8 enema 9 surgery
Main Outcome
The primary outcome measure will be weekly frequency of spontaneous defecation. This is defined as the mean number of spontaneous bowel movements per week. Measures of effect We will use the risk ratio with 95% CI to express the estimate of the effect for dichotomous outcome. For continuous outcome, we will express the estimate of the effect as mean difference with 95% CI.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Secondary outcome measures include constipation severity measurements using Cleveland Clinic Score (CCS), Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) or Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS), mental state measurement using SCL-90 and quality of life measurement using Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality of Life Question-naire (PAC-QOL). Measures of effect We will use the risk ratio with 95% CI to express the estimate of the effect for dichotomous outcome. For continuous outcome, we will express the estimate of the effect as mean difference with 95% CI.
