- Title
- The Protective Effect of 1, 8-cineole (Eucalyptol) on Respiratory System:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis from animal studies
- Review Question
- Does 1, 8-cineole (Eucalyptus) have protective effects in animal studies on models of inflammation or respiratory injury compared with model controls? Population (P): animal models of airway inflammation and respiratory injury Intervention (I): Treatment by 1, 8-cineole (Eucalyptol) Comparison (C): model controls Outcomes (O): inflammatory factors level reduction Context and rationale Respiratory diseases are a serious threat to human health. With the change of human living environment, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and other lung injuries are increasing and have become the main factors threatening human health. Airway inflammation and oxidative stress are the direct factors affecting the respiratory system, which lead to and aggravate the occurrence and development of respiratory system diseases. Various reasons lead to the release of airway inflammation factors, triggered a series of pathological process, such as the accumulation of the neutrophils and macrophages in the injury of endothelial cells, muscle cells, and neutrophils induced by oxygen free radicals and the release of inflammatory mediators, further accumulation of airway inflammation and peroxide, exacerbating lung damage. Therefore, it is important to find candidate anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative interventions. 1, 8-cineole (Eucalyptol) is a natural cyclic monoterpene compound. It has been reported that it may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, and act on respiratory diseases. However, few studies have been done and the mechanism of action remains unclear. This study evaluated the protective effects of 1, 8-cineole on the respiratory system by integrating previous randomized controlled and controlled studies conducted in animal studies .This study evaluated the protective effects of 1, 8-cineole on the respiratory system by integrating previous randomized controlled and controlled studies conducted in animal studies .
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Controlled studies with a separate control group Exclusion criteria: 1.Case studies; 2.Cross-over studies; 3.Studies without a separate control group.
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: The subjects of this study are rats and mice, and there are no special requirements on the sex and age of the animals. The animal models studied were associated with respiratory diseases, including asthma, COPD and lung injury. There are no special requirements for damage mode. Exclusion criteria: 1. The study subjects were not rats or mice; 2. The animal models studied were not associated with respiratory diseases; 3.The animals were complicated with other non-respiratory diseases.
- Human Disease Modelled
- Patients with airway inflammation and lung function injury. The study included models of respiratory disease including asthma, COPD and lung injury. There are no special requirements for the mode of damage. The purpose is to observe the protective effect of 1, 8-cineole(Eucalyptol)on respiratory system.
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: Intervention of interest is any preparation (whole, powder, extract, standardized mixture) of 1, 8-cineole (eucalyptol). The dosage and timing and frequency of intervention are unlimited. Exclusion criteria: Those that do not include 1, 8-cineole(Eucalyptol)as the primary intervention will be excluded.Data results that are not available should also be excluded.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: Model control group and experimental group(in the involved dose groups, the group with the best effect was selected as reference, and the other dose groups were excluded). Exclusion criteria: Blank group
- Main Outcome
- Outcome Measure
- Inclusion criteria: Inflammatory markers of respiratory disease.Specific included outcome indicators are limited by literature quality and data reliability. In the specific research, we will further discuss and analyze it. Exclusion criteria: 1.Outcome measures not associated with inflammation or respiratory disease; 2.Outcomes that are unreliable or cannot be extracted from the study will also be excluded.
