Title
Honey for acute cough in children
Review Question
Is honey effective in reducing acute cough symptoms in children aged 1-18 years of age?
Study Type Included
We will include only randomized controlled trials regardless of the blinding.
Condition Being Studied
Cough is a common symptom in children. Acute cough is usually caused by acute respiratory tract infection, which is either viral or bacterial. Cough weakens the quality of life and sleeping quality and therefore symptomatic treatment is needed also in children. Previously over the counter medications were used, but these have associated to increased severe adverse event rates and therefore effective alternatives are needed. Honey has had controversary results regarding the symptomatic relief.

We will include all children aged one to seventeen years of age with acute cough. Acute cough means that the duration is less than 14 days.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled

Intervention is honey or a cough syrup containing honey.
Comparator Control
Comparators are no treatment, placebo and over the counter medications.

Our main outcome measures will be change in the cough severity, cough frequency and childrens quality of sleep after the onset of the intervention. Measures of effect We will calculate mean difference or standardized mean differences depending on the used scales of the included studies.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
We will analyse the rates of adverse events. Measures of effect We will use relative risk with 95% confidence intervals and also calculate number needed to harm.
