- Title
- A comparison of the effectiveness of available treatment options for depressive disorder in children and adolescents:a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- There is a substantial unmet need for the development of an up-to-date, systematic, hierarchical ranking of currently approved and unapproved treatment options in depression, in order to ultimately maximize clinical efficacy and minimize the duration, frequency, and morbidity of depressive mood episodes. Our objective is to compare the efficacy of available intervention options (include antidepressants, psychotherapies, physical and their combination interventions)tested in randomised controlled trials for the treatment of depression in children and adolescents using a network meta-analysis.
- Study Type Included
- We will include all randomized controlled trials of depressive disorder where outcome assessments for depressive symptoms of study interventions. Cluster or quasi-randomised studies and studies with open (unblinded) design will be excluded. In case of cross-over studies, data from the first phase before the crossover will be used in order to avoid carry over effects. Studies with a high risk of bias in randomization process (domain 1 of RoB tool version 2) will also be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Domain being studied is Depression. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living.
- Participant
- Included: Children and adolescents whose with elevated, clinically relevant symptoms of depression as measured by validated self-reported measures or according to standard operationalized diagnostic criteria (KSADS, CCMD-3, DSM III, DSM IIIR, DSM IV, DSM V, ICD10, ICD11 and so on). Participants are less than 18 years old. Excluded: Studies will be excluded if their inclusion criteria include children and adolescents with cognitive impairments (e.g., learning difficulties and autism), anxiety disorder, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, chronic or acute physical health conditions and so on.

- Intervention
- Psychological interventions: -Cognitive behavioural therapy(CBT); -Behavioural therapy(BT); -Computer-based cognitive behavioral therapy(CCBT); -Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT); -Mindfulness-based intervention(MBI); -family-based therapy(FBT); -Attention Bias Modification(ABM); -Psychotherapy(PSY); -Naikan Therapy (NT). Pharmacological interventions: -Sertraline; -fluoxetine; -escitalopram; -citalopram; -paroxetine; -venlafaxine; -vilazodone; -vortioxetine; -agomelatine; -benzodiazepines; -duloxetine; -aripiprazole; -quetiapine; -amitriptyline; -neurostan; -Shugan Jieyu capsule; -Xiaoyu Anshen decoction; Physical interventions: -Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation; -Transcranial direct current stimulation; It also includes the intervention measures combined with the above two.
- Comparator Control
- -Treatment as usual; -Waitlist; -Sham; -Placebo.
- Main Outcome
- The primary outcome for the review will be depressive symptom final score at postintervention and at 1 to 12 month follow-up assessments. To be included in the analysis, assessment of depressive symptoms must be self-report using a validated measure. In cases where a study uses multiple appropriate measures for depressive symptoms, we will prioritise the measure that is most used across all included studies for consistency across the network. In cases where one particular measure used in a study is not more common in the network than another, we will use the measure that the authors of the study consider to be the primary measure. In cases where there are multiple measurement points within the 1 to 12 month timeframe, we will use the measurement point closest to 12 months.
