- The efficacy of combined Shensongyangxin capsule and Amiodaron on the treatments of chronic heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- Our study hypothesized that the combined SSYXC and AMI treatments can increase the clinical response rate for CHF patients, and can reduce NT-proBNP, QRS wave duration, QT dispersion, total premature ventricular contractions and adverse side effects.
- Study Type Included
- 2.1. Selection of studies Our study collected all randomized paired experiments in published literature that reported the effects from both the combined SSYXC and AMI treatments and the AMI only treatment on CHF in both Chinese and other languages. 2.2. Inclusion criteria Included patients with a diagnosis of CHF based on Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic heart failure in European Society of Cardiology” (2016 ESC). Cardiac function categories were classified according to classification standards of New York Heart Association (NYHA). Only the experiments with at least 50 CHF cases for each of the combined treatment and control treatment were selected. 2.3. Exclusion criteria Below were excluded: (1) basic clinic research, theoretical research, cell or animal experiments and reviews; (2) control treatments including the compound effects between AMI and other Chinese medicines; (3) missing data or obviously low-quality data; and (4) repeatedly published or full articles are unavailable for access.

- Based on the retrieved 13 papers, there were a total number of 2, 369 patient cases (1, 187 in the experiment group and 1, 182 in the control group) in this meta-analysis, with an age range from 23 to 85 years’ old. All the studies were conducted in China and published in Chinese. Paired experimental designs, i.e., experimental versus control groups, were applied. Experimental groups included the combined SSYXC, AMI and other regular treatments, while the control groups were treated with AMI and other regular treatments. All the studies reported the clinical response rate.

- Comparator Control
- 2.4. Treatments in experimental and control groups Patients in the experimental groups were all treated with combined SSYXC and AMI, and other regular treatments. Patients in the control group included AMI treatment and other regular treatments. The regular treatments included the uses of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and β-blockers according to the patient conditions. The experiment group or control group which included other interventions were excluded. There were no limitations on dosage and treatment cycle of combined SSYXC and AMI treatments.
- Main Outcome
- Totally 13 studies including 2, 369 experiments were selected. Compared with the AMI only treatment, the combined treatment showed significant differences in the clinical response rate (RR = 0.34, 95% CI: 0.27-0.43; P<0.00001), N-terminal pronatriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) (MD=-168.47, 95% CI: -291.66─-45.28; P=0.007), part of electrocardiographic wave (QRS) duration (MD=-0.02, 95% CI: -0.02─0.02; P<0.00001), and adverse effects (RR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.25─0.86; P =0.01). Measures of effect The clinical response rate (RR), N-terminal pronatriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) , part of electrocardiographic wave (QRS) duration, and adverse effects.
