Herbal Medicine Patrinia herba for acute respiratory tract infections: a systematic review of clinical studies
Review Question
This systematic review aims to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of the herb Herba Patriniae in acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs).
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), clinical controlled trials (CCT), case-control studies, and cohort studies will be included.
Condition Being Studied
Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs).
Participant
Patients in all age groups will be included whether their diagnoses of ARTIs were confirmed or suspected. Diagnoses include common cold, influenza, rhinosinusitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, croup, acute otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia, and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Symptoms of suspected ARTIs including cough, sore throat, fever, runny nose, and discoloured sputum for a duration of equal or fewer than four weeks. Any life-threatening condition will be excluded. Participants who were clearly diagnosed chronic without infection or reported vaguely on whether were infected or not will be excluded.

Intervention
Herbal medicine Patrinia herba (Bai Jiang Cao), either as a single herb or a herbal mixture, presented in any form of preparations, e.g. decoctions, granules, injections, paste, pills, and steam, provided with or without conventional therapies. There will be no limitation concerning the dosage, dose administrated, or the course of the treatment.
Comparator Control
Placebo, no treatment, waiting list control; usual care such as antipyretics, antivirals, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, steroids or corticosteroids will be included.
Main Outcome
Symptom improvement -Time to complete resolution of systemic symptoms (in days), or proportion of patients resolved at a predefined time. The following symptoms were expected to be of primary interest (key symptoms): fever and pain all over the body. -Time to complete resolution of respiratory symptoms (in days), or proportion of patients with key symptoms resolved at a predefined time. The following symptoms were expected to be of primary interest (key symptoms): runny nose, cough and sore throat.
Outcome Measure

1. Changes in the use of antibiotic, e.g. dose, duration, or the form of antibiotics. 2. (Proportion of participants with) Days off work or school due to ARTIs or acute exacerbation of ARTIs. 3.vProportion of participants who need to be admitted to hospital; length of hospitalization. 1. Adverse events (AEs) (any anaphylactic, allergic reactions, hypersensitivity reactions, or complications that were resulted from Patrinia herba, and any herbal-drug interactions will be collected) Serious AEs will be defined according to the International Council on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) guidelines as follows: 1. Any event that leads to death, is life-threatening, requires hospitalisation, or leads to persistent or significant disability. 2. Abnormal vital signs and abnormal physical observations results such as electrolytes, liver, and kidney function tests (alanine aminotransferase and creatinine).
