- Title
- Effectiveness of Neem (Azadirachta indica) as therapeutic and prophylactic agent for malaria infection
- Review Question
- What is the effectiveness of Neem (Azadirachta indica) when used as therapeutic and prophylactic agent for malaria infection?
- Study Type Included
- We will include all cross-sectional survey studies, qualitative studies, case-control studies, randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, and cohort studies with or without comparison groups.
- Condition Being Studied
- The therapeutics role of Azadirachta indica (Neem), locally known as Muarobaini cannot be underestimated. Neem’s full therapeutic potential arises from its diverse medicinal value as barks, leaves, seeds and less frequently, the roots, flowers, and fruits. It is said that Neem can variably relieve patients from malaria, stomach and intestinal ulcers, skin diseases, pain, and fever to mention a few, all of which cause discomfort and various threats to human health. Neem can work as anticancer and treatment agent for various disease via the regulation of various biological and physiological pathways (Alzohairy, 2016). To get information on the formal use, prophylactic and therapeutic effects of neem in treatment of malaria, surveying online health information databases is critical. It would provide cumulative evidence of use and potential benefits to the communities in use. Experimental studies in mice using neem leaf and stem bark extracts have shown significant reduction in mouse malaria, Plasmodium berghei level of parasitemia by 51–80% and 56–87%, respectively (Akin-Osanaiya et al, 2013). Similar studies in human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, culture asexual and the sexual forms has shown 50% reduction in both asexual parasites and mature gametocytes numbers in control cultures (Udeinya et al, 2008) leaving apart the insecticidal effects to malaria vectors (Nathan, 2005; Mulla and Su, 1999; Dhar et al, 1996). This systematic review therefore focuses on exploring the effectiveness of neem as therapeutic and prophylactic agent in malaria patients. The review will also assess the methodologies and potential study designs currently in use to study the effectiveness of this plant as antimalarial drug in variety of communities worldwide. It will further evaluate current research trends and gaps, and their value in management of malaria and potential use of local medicinal plants in malaria control programs where it works.
- Participant
- Primarily both children and adult malaria patients Inclusion criteria – patients diagnosed of malaria Exclusion criteria – malaria patients using other traditional medications other than Neem as well as those who do not use Neem.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Use of Azadirachta indica (Neem) for malaria treatment and prophylaxis
- Comparator Control
- Patients who do not use Azadirachta indica (Neem) or who use other alternative local traditional medication or who do not use medications at all.
- Main Outcome
- The study is expected to reveal the effectiveness of Azadirachta indica (Neem) in enabling patients to recover from disease after use and impact on prevention, control and treatment of the disease. Societal perception on the use of the Neem as medicinal plant to control malaria in endemic areas will also be assessed and reported from studies that focused on attitude towards Neem use as medication to malaria.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- 1. Improved quality of health following use of the product as medication 2. Reduced visits to hospital/malaria clinics due malaria bouts 3. Improved quality in designing malaria studies 4. Increased level of awareness about the usefulness of Azadirachta indica (Neem) in treating malaria 5. Cost-effectiveness compared to standard drugs 6. Reported side effect
