Title
Effects of Using Coconut Oil as a Topical Treatment on Healthy Female Hair: A Systematic Review
Review Question
Does the regular topical application of pure organic coconut oil truly have any significant effects (beneficial or harmful) on all types of hair which are healthy to begin with?
Study Type Included
All randomized controlled trials and observational studies (case control studies, cohort studies, cross-sectional studies) will be included
Condition Being Studied
Considering the fact that hair growth begins from inside of the root/scalp, it stands to reason that any kind of topical application or treatments which are administered to the scalp and/or lengths of an individual’s hair may only serve to maintain and preserve the condition of their existing hair rather than directly stimulating the growth of any new hairs; instead, the inclusion of certain supplementation within one’s daily diet regimen is directly correlated to hair follicle growth. However, there appear to be a number of misleading reports with regards to the ability of coconut oil in particular to not only increase and preserve the moisture of healthy hair, but also to stimulate new growth; moreover, there is some particularly dangerous misinformation circulating with regards to its potential ability to even repair/reverse dryness or hair loss. Based upon a search conducted through MEDLINE, we were able to identify one other systematic review which was conducted on the same topic, but which also included the effects of castor and argan oils on hair health.
Participant
Adult females of all ethnic backgrounds with no existing conditions who have subject their hair to a regular monthly or weekly topical treatment of coconut oil; these will be stratified by racial group to determine whether women of African descent experience more effective treatments as compared with those of non-African descent.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Adult females of all ethnic backgrounds with no existing conditions who have subjected their hair to topical treatment by coconut oil.
Comparator Control
Adult females of all ethnic backgrounds with no existing conditions who have not subjected their hair to topical treatment by coconut oil.
Main Outcome
Hair quality including strength/resilience, softness, and sheen. Measures of effect relative risks: reported effect measures for the composite outcomes and separate outcomes if available, including p-values, standard deviation, and confidence intervals.
