Title
Systematic review of clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of ivy leaf (hedera helix) for acute upper respiratory tract infections: an update
Review Question
What is the effectiveness and tolerability of ivy leaf (Hedera Helix) in the treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infections in the adult and pediatric population?
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs), non-controlled observational studies (OSs) will be included. Studies to be excluded will be those without an explicit study design or method, as well as cross-sectional studies, therapy guidelines, and reviews.
Condition Being Studied
Acute upper respiratory tract infections including acute bronchitis.
Participant
Adults and pediatric populations with respiratory symptoms such as cough caused by upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) including bronchitis. No specific age groups will be excluded. We will exclude studies that investigate patients with other acute diseases such as pertussis, pneumonia, or chronic upper respiratory tract diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. However, we will not exclude studies if the majority of study subjects had URTIs or if treatment results were reported separately.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Therapies with herbal expectorants containing ivy leaf (Hedera Helix) either as a single agent or in combination with other herbal agents will be investigated. All dosages will be included. Only oral or rectal forms of administration will be included.
Comparator Control
Included studies will contain a comparison to placebo, conventional expectorants (e.g., acetylcysteine), or other herbal therapies. Where other inclusion criteria are met, observational studies without a control group will also be included.
Main Outcome
Clinical outcomes such as morbidity, mortality, health-related quality of life measured by any instrument; surrogate values such as spirometric parameters (e.g., pulmonary function tests, lung volumes) measured before and after intervention; physical examination findings (e.g., auscultation, percussion) by physicians; assessment of symptoms such as cough by either physician or patient; assessment of tolerability (e.g., undesired side effects, hypersensitivity reactions) by either physician or patient. Measures of effect Outcomes will be assessed before and after therapy with an ivy leaf formulation.
