- Review Question
- It is believed that warm classic Chinese herbal medicine have an outstanding clinical effect on angina pectoris. This network meta-analysis was devised to investigate the comparative efficacy of warm classic Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of angina pectoris.
- Condition
- Angina pectoris is a clinical syndrome characterized by chest pain caused by transient myocardial ischemia and is the most common manifestation of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. It is usually seen in patients with at least one major branch of coronary artery whose lumen diameter is more than 50%. When there is physical or mental stress, coronary blood flow cannot meet the needs of myocardial metabolism, leading to myocardial ischemia and angina attack, which can be relieved by rest or nitroglycerin. Reduction of Angina Pectoris and Improvement of Electrocardiogram are important outcomes of Angina pectoris. Chinese herbal medicine has outstanding effect for Angina pectoris. Especially classic herbal decoction are widely used in China for Angina pectoris. Five classic herbal decoctions were selected, Gualou xiebai banxia decoction (contains: Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim, Allium macrostemon, Pinellia ternate, white spirits), Zhishi xiebai guizhi decoction (contains: Immature Bitter Orange, Magnolia officinalis, Allium macrostemon, Cassia Twig, Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim), Huangqi guizhi wuwu decoction (contains: Astragalus, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Cassia Twig, Ginger, Jujube), Linggui zhugan decoction (contains: Poria cocos, cassia twig, atractylodes, licorice root), Danggui sini decoction (contains: Angelica, cassia twig, peony, asarum, licorice, tongcao, jujube)
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: Patients were diagnosed with AP by meeting a standard diagnostic criterion. No limitation on gender, nationality, or ethnic origin was applied. Exclusion criteria: Patients with other major illnesses
- Intervention
- Chinese herbal medicine (classic herbal decoction) plus western medicine vs. western medicine
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: Patients in the experiment group received one of the eligible warm classic Chinese herbal medicine with western medicine, while patients in the control group received only the same western medicine or western medicine plus another warm classic Chinese herbal medicine or western medicine plus placebo.
- Main Outcome
- Reduction of Angina Pectoris was calculated by this formula: (number of recovery patients / total number of patients) * 100%. Patient recovery was indicated when the number of anginal attacks and nitroglycerine dosage were decreased by 50 percent. Improvement in electrocardiography was calculated by this formula: (number of recovery patients / total number of patients) * 100%. Patient recovery was also indicated when the ischaemic ST-T segment of ECG returned to normal, the ST segment decreased and returned to greater than or equal to 0.05 mV, or the T wave converted to upright. Measures of effect 1 week to 4 months
