Title
Efficacy and safety of Danggui niantong decoction in patients with gout: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Review Question
Is Danggui niantong decoction beneficial and safe for patients with gout?
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials.
Condition Being Studied
Gout is a chronic inflammatory arthritis characterized by hyperuricemia and sodium urate deposition. Epidemiological evidence indicates that the incidence of gout in developed countries is about 4%, and has a rising trend. More and more reports show that gout can not only cause kidney diseases and joint damage, but also is closely related to severe diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and coronary heart disease, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. At present, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and colchicine are still the most commonly used drugs for clinical treatment of gout. However, long-term use of these drugs may lead to some annoying side effects, including gastrointestinal ulcers, skin rash, osteoporosis, and so on. Therefore, it is urgent to find more reliable and low-toxicity alternative treatment strategies for gout. Danggui niantong decoction, first recorded in The Origin of Medicine, is one of the classical prescriptions for the treatment of gout. A series of clinical studies have reported that Danggui niantong decoction can effectively improve the clinical symptoms and related indicators of patients with gout, but there is no systematic review or meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of Danggui niantong decoction and verify whether it is an ideal alternative therapy.
