- Title
- Network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on the monotherapy of angina pectoris in China: a protocol
- Review Question
- This study aims to compare, using network meta-analysis, the efficacies of Chinese patent medicines, shexiang baoxin pill (BXP), compound danshen dripping pill (DSP), compound danshen tablet (DST), suxiao jiuxin pill (JXP), naoxintong capsule (NXT), tongxinluo capsule (TXL), di’ao xinxuekang capsule (XXK), and conventional drugs, atenolol (ATEN), isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN), and nifedipine (NIFE), in treating angina pectoris.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) will be included. Observational cohort and case-control studies, case reports, experimental studies and reviews will be excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Coronary heart disease (CHD) angina pectoris is characterized by ischemia of the heart muscles and imbalance of coronary circulation. The symptoms of angina include chest pain, discomfort, and tightness in the neck, shoulders, jaw, or arms, particularly under physical or emotional stress. Patients suffering from angina are usually diagnosed by clinical examinations of symptoms (SYM), electrocardiograms (ECG), and blood enzyme levels.
- Participant
- Inclusion: participants suffering from and required treatment for angina pectoris. Exclusion: participants suffering from complicated heart disease conditions.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Participants were treated by one of the following nine drugs: shexiang baoxin pill (BXP), compound danshen dripping pill (DSP), compound danshen tablet (DST), suxiao jiuxin pill (JXP), naoxintong capsule (NXT), tongxinluo capsule (TXL), di’ao xinxuekang capsule (XXK), atenolol (ATEN), isosorbide dinitrate (ISD), and nifedipine (NIF).
- Comparator Control
- Participants were treated by one of the included nine drugs other than the drug of interest.
- Main Outcome
- The first outcome was symptomatic (SYM) improvement that should achieve at least 50% (i.e. basic SYM improvement) or above 80% (i.e. significant SYM improvement) reduction in the frequency of feeling anginal chest pain.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- The second outcome was ECG improvement that should achieve at least 0.05 mV at ST segment (i.e. basic ECG improvement) or nearly normal ECG (i.e. significant ECG improvement).

- Same Topic Review
- The PRISMA-compliant systematic reviews with traditional pairwise meta-analysis indicate that some Chinese patent medicines such as DSP, TXL, and XXK are more efficacious than ISDN in treating angina. 1.
