Traditional Chinese patent medicine for the treatment of prediabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
The objective of this review was to systematically assess the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of TCPM for treating prediabetes.
Study Type Included
It was restricted to Randomized controlled trials that compared traditional Chinese patent medicine with control group.
Condition Being Studied
The epidemic trend of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major crisis globally. Take one of the largest developing countries, China, as an example, it has 1.096 billion diabetic patients, which account for 11.6% of adults. In addition, the prevalence of prediabetes is 50.1%, accounting for a total number of 493.4 million. Several systematic reviews have indicated that lifestyle intervention is clearly effective for the treatment of prediabetes and prevention of T2DM. However, it is not easy to change people`s lifestyle formed over decades and maintain rigorous and sustained lifestyle intervention for the long-term. Besides, lifestyle intervention could reduce the incidence of T2DM during its limited period of use, but this action does not persist. One of the most appreciable distinctions between China and the West in treating prediabetes is the use of Traditional Chinese patent medicine (TCPM). Many patients with prediabetes are willing to choose TCPMs because it had not yet reached the stage of long-term use of anti-diabetic drugs, and the use of anti-diabetic drugs often is often associated with adverse reactions, and TCPMs are more convenient to be administrated and take along. Many researchers also tend to choose TCPMs due to convenience for efficacy evaluation in clinical trials. Few systematic reviews have been published in English reporting the effectiveness and safety of many commonly used TCPMs, even though they have been widely accepted and authoritatively recommended by the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) (available at http://www.sda.gov.cn), the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2010 edition) and Chinese guideline for type 2 diabetes in China. Currently, there is as yet no authoritatively recommended and generally accepted pharmacological intervention for prediabetes, except for metformin with gastrointestinal side effects. Therefore, confirmation of the effectiveness of TCPM could have a great impact on prediabetes management in the world.
Participant
This review included participants irrespective of gender, age, ethnicity, but all participants should to be diagnosed prediabetes by clearly defined or internationally recognized criteria.

RCTs that compared 1 TCPM plus lifestyle modification (LM) versus LM alone, or 1 TCPM plus LM versus placebo plus LM were eligible

No restriction for the control group, including placebo, conventional western treatment, no treatment (blank), et al;

Primary outcomes were set as the incidence of T2DM and adverse events
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Secondary outcomes were set as glycemic control based on fasting blood glucose, two-hour postprandial blood glucose, body mass index (BMI) .
