Title
Effect of dill (Anethum Graveolens Linn) on the duration of labor
Review Question
Is dill (Anethum Graveolens) effective on the duration of labor?
Study Type Included
All published randomized controlled trials studies
Condition Being Studied
Prolonged labor is associated with fetal complications, including head compression, impaired oxygen supply, poor neonatal outcome, low APGAR score, fetal death, increased serious complications such as perineal trauma and increased cesarean delivery. However, the use of uterotonic agents increase some risks for mother the fetus. So, in modern obstetrics, the major focus is on non-invasive methods with minimal side effects. So far studies showed that Dill seeds have been a safe herb as alternative medicine. Therefore, testing the effects of Dill on uterus contractions pattern and labor duration is important.
Participant
Women with term pregnancy who are beginning their active phase of labor.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Anethum Graveolens is an herbaceous and aromatic herb and the chemical combination of the seeds includes tannin, resin, an oily essence of limonene, ketone, and carvon. It has been suggested that tannin is usually from polyphones that have contractile properties. This herb in the laboratory has had contractile effects on myometrium. Moreover, Dill seeds lead to releasing oxytocin which plays an important role in uterine contraction. Thus Dill may be helpful in uterus contractions pattern of uterus and duration of labor.
Comparator Control
The control group is women who received routine care
Main Outcome
The contraction of the uterus, the length of the active phase and the second stage of labor. Measures of effect The contraction of the uterus considered any measurements on the duration of contraction that measured and reported by minutes. The first stage of labor means any measurement from the beginning of the active phase (dilation of the cervix, 3-4 cm) until full dilation. The second stage of labor is the duration from full dilation until expulsion of the baby.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
• perineal trauma. • Hypotension. • cesarean delivery rate. • Instrumental delivery Secondary Neonatal outcome • Low APGAR score. • Admission to neonatal intensive care. • Fetal death. Measures of effect The contraction of the uterus considered any measurements on the duration of contraction that measured and reported by minutes. The first stage of labor means any measurement from the beginning of the active phase (dilation of the cervix, 3-4 cm) until full dilation. The second stage of labor is the duration from full dilation until the expulsion of the baby.
