- Title
- A systematic review and meta-analysis of scorpion envenomation in Saudi Arabia: the protocol
- Review Question
- - To scientifically revise all published research studies on scorpion envenomation in Saudi Arabia. - To present an overview of the reported incidence, severity, outcomes and treatment protocols used for scorpion envenomation in Saudi Arabian health care facilities. - To shed light on any knowledge gaps, and recommend modifications to the current protocols of managing scorpion stings.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion: studies on scorpion envenomation in Saudi Arabia. Studies conducted in central, western, eastern, northern and southern regions Saudi Arabia, which have reported findings from multiple regions within Saudi Arabia, and case reports will be reported in this systematic review, but will not be analyzed. Exclusion: laboratory experiments (animal research), pharmacokinetics studies and anti-venom production; documentaries, editorials, and letters to editors.
- Condition Being Studied
- Across various geographical regions, each species of scorpion is distinguished by its level of venom toxicity/potency. This means that emergency departments are expected to observe different clinical patterns of scorpion envenomation, which necessitates more customized, specific, and applicable clinical management protocols. Evidence-based studies conducted on scorpion envenomation in certain regions of the world are particularly significant to the body of knowledge, and are the corner stone to refining these clinical management guidelines. Clinicians working in these regions favor well organized, brief, and customized synopses of outcome analysis-based research studies to assist them in all the clinical aspects of scorpion envenomation, such as diagnostic criteria, severity and treatment modalities. In addition, the general public, whether through direct access to journals or media, could also be interested in the latest research studies conducted on scorpion stings. No systematic review has been published on scorpion envenomation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but the country has witnessed 72, 168 scorpion stings among 11 regions over a course of 5 years. Therefore, there is an emerging need to summarize the findings of studies conducted in Saudi Arabia, and to align them with the international literature.
- Participant
- Saudi Arabian populations of all age groups.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Scorpion envenomation.
- Comparator Control
- Not applicable.
- Main Outcome
- The period prevalence of scorpion stings (adjusted by region) among the revised studies will be calculated by summating the total number of stings reported by studies within one region over the sum of their study periods (total number of cases per year within one region). The prevalence of scorpion type will be calculated by dividing the number of the confirmed scorpion type in one region over the number of stung victims reported by each study, adjusted by region. Measures of effect Not applicable.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- The classification of clinical manifestations induced by scorpion stings: to be tabulated as reported by the studies, based on the four levels of severity. The Abroug’s classification scale categorizes the severity of cases into local manifestations, minor systemic manifestations, major manifestations, and lethal envenomation. The range of hospital length of stay, admission rate and mortality rate as reported by the revised articles will be presented. The pattern and outcomes of scorpion anti-venom administration reported in all revised studies will be tabulated with detailed highlights on sensitivity tests performed prior ante-venom administration, time of administration, dosage and allergic reactions encountered. As a wrap up for this systematic review, the general objectives and main findings of each individual study will be presented too. A critique of the encountered methodological biases, limitations and deficiencies observed in the revised articles will also be presented. Measures of effect Not applicable.
