- Title
- The effect of khat use during pregnancy on maternal and perinatal outcomes: Meta-analysis
- Review Question
- This systematic review and meta analysis will address the following research questions: how does khat use during pregnancy cause poor maternal and perinatal outcomes as compared to non khat using pregnant women?
- Study Type Included
- Longitudinal cohort studies, case control studies, and cross-sectional studies that report maternal or perinatal outcome of khat use during pregnancy will be included in this systematic review. Studies that are published only in English language will be considered in this review. Inclusion Criteria: 1. studies that report either maternal outcomes or perinatal outcomes of pregnant women who use khat and compares those outcomes with pregnant women who did not use khat 2. Studies that have odds ratios (ORs) and its 95% confidence intervals (CIs) or if the raw data lets to calculate ORs and its 95% Cis Exclusion Criteria: 1. Studies like editorials, letters, opinion pieces, and case studies 2. Animal studies 3. Studies if they reported the same data on effect of khat use during pregnancy on maternal and perinatal outcomes from a previous article
- Condition Being Studied
- Khat use during pregnancy are associated with poor pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. Chewing khat can lead to obstetric complications for pregnant women such as pregnancy induced hypertension, miscarriage, preterm labour, abruption of placenta, postpartum haemorrhage and mental illness. Existing studies reveal that low birth weight, decreased maternal milk production, decreased foetal growth, stillbirth, and prematurity is reported in women who uses khat. However, the available studies are scanty, inconsistent with findings, and difficulty to draw conclusion due to methodological limitations. As such, knowledge, about the safety of khat use during pregnancy is crucial, yet our understanding about the effect of prenatal khat use on maternal and perinatal outcomes remains inconclusive. Despite of this, to date, there has been no comprehensive synthesis on the effect of khat use during pregnancy both on maternal and perinatal outcomes. This systematic review and metanalysis, aims to synthesis evidence from available studies on the effect of khat use during pregnancy on maternal and perinatal outcomes.
- Participant
- Pregnant women are the study participants in this review. Inclusion criteria for the exposed group are pregnant women who use khat during their pregnancy, whereas, for non-exposed group, pregnant women who did not chew khat during their pregnancy are included in this review. Exclusion criteria: pregnant women's age less than 18 and above 40 years will be excluded.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Khat use during pregnancy is defined as those pregnant women who either self report as they consume khat during pregnancy or have positive biological test for khat use during pregnancy is considered as exposed group.
- Comparator Control
- Pregnant women, who never use khat during pregnancy is comparison group.
- Main Outcome
- Maternal outcomes: abortion, pregnancy induced hypertension, antepartum haemorrhage, preterm labour, premature rupture of membrane, type of delivery, postpartum haemorrhage, maternal mortality and maternal mental health. Perinatal outcomes: Preterm birth, low birth weight, body length, perinatal asphyxia, head circumference, stillbirth, congenital anomaly, and neonatal admission.
