- Condition Being Studied
- The leafy plant khat, is a stimulant when chewed. It contains the alkaloid cathinone (the stimulant) which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite, and euphoria. Despite of having such health and economic consequences, khat chewing has been practiced as a stimulant and social custom for thousands of years in the Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula. Before the beginning of the twenty-first century only limited amount of khat was chewed; while currently, it has become a highly prevalent habit and growing public health concern. Though the exact number of people who chew khat is unknown, global estimates ranged from 5 to 10 million people chewing khat. In Ethiopia, the numbers of khat chewers have significantly increased all over the country. According to the pooled prevalence of EDHS data of 2011 and 2016 survey years about 17% of Ethiopian respondents reported chewing khat. Traditionally khat chewing is confined to adult men.
