Title
Impact of Lycium barbarum intake on cardiovascular health: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
What is the effect of Lycium barbarum consumption on overall cardiovascular health?
Study Type Included
We will include randomized trials to assess the beneficial effects of the Lycium barbarum dietary intervention.
Condition Being Studied
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), a disorder of the heart and blood vessels, has been regarded as one of the leading causes of death globally
Participant
Humans without age restriction
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The intervention needs to include the consumption of Lycium barbarum (wolfberry). This can be defined as the consumption of the whole fruit, processed whole fruit (e.g. dried), infusion, juice, extract (e.g. lycium barbarum polysaccharides) as a part of the intervention.
Comparator Control
Another intervention group or control group which provided no Lycium barbarum (wolfberry) as a part of the intervention. This can be defined as the consumption of a placebo or substitute beverages/food or no intervention.
Main Outcome
Changes in the following outcomes from baseline:1) Classical CVD risk factors including blood lipids, lipoproteins and blood pressure 2) CVD associated biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation e.g. malondialdehyde, 8-isoprostanes, interleukin-6, c-reactive protein, tumor necorsis factor alpha etc. 3) Cardiovascular health indicators e.g. blood circulation time/flow velocity, flow mediated dilation, carotid intima media thickness, pulse wave analysis, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, heart function tests, etc. Measures of effect Changes pre- and post-intervention
