Title
Effects of Tryptophan Supplementation on Depressive Disorder: Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
Review Question
What are the effects of tryptophan supplementation in individuals diagnosed with depressive disorder?
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials and uncontrolled clinical trials that have verified the efficacy of tryptophan supplementation in populations diagnosed with depression. Will be excluded: Narrative, integrative and systematic reviews, editorials, dissertations, theses, and studies that do not fit the outline of this work.
Condition Being Studied
Depression is one of the most common and frequent mental disorders nowadays, and its most used conventional treatments involve pharmacological therapy through the use of antidepressants and non-pharmacological treatments such as psychotherapy. However, adjuvant and adherence treatments have been increasingly used as potential therapeutic resources for depression, such as a healthy diet that is able to provide key nutrients for proper brain functioning, for example, tryptophan, an essential amino acid and the main precursor of the happiness hormone, serotonin. The overall objective of this study is to analyze the effects of tryptophan supplementation on depressive disorder. This is a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, which will be conducted from the construction of search strategies that address the proposed research question: What are the effects of tryptophan supplementation in individuals diagnosed with depressive disorder? based on the structure of the acronym PICO.
