- Title
- Natural health products used in integrative cancer care during the peri-operative period: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of mistletoe extract, branched-chain amino acids, and probiotics
- Review Question
- What is the safety and efficacy evidence for the adjunctive use of select natural health products (NHPs) in cancer patients undergoing surgery?
- Study Type Included
- For Efficacy outcomes- randomized controlled trials (RCTs) only. For Adverse Events- RCTs, nonrandomized and quasi-randomized controlled clinical trials, controlled observational cohort and case-control studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Cancer
- Participant
- We will include all oncology patients undergoing cancer-related surgery.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The natural health products (NHPs) below will be included, regardless of route of administration, dose, duration, and formulation (i.e., used alone or in combinations): 1. Probiotics (e.g., Lactobacillus acidophilus and other L. species, Bifidobacteria spp., etc.); 2. Branched-chain amino acids (i.e., Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine); 3. Mistletoe (Viscum album) extracts: all types and preparations.
- Comparator Control
- We will evaluate these interventions compared to placebo, active control, or no adjunctive treatment (i.e., usual care).
- Main Outcome
- Primary outcomes: Survival/ mortality, treatment response, recurrence/ remission, disease progression/ metastasis, and stable disease. Measures of effect Relative risks
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Secondary outcomes: We will also include adverse events, post-operative infections and length of antibiotic use, bleeding, length of hospitalization, quality of life/ performance status, wound healing, pain, weight/ BMI/ arm & waist circumference, fatigue, and other complications (e.g., ascites, edema, pleural effusion, liver failure, flapping tremors, encephalopathy, prothrombin time, intestinal obstruction, ileus, constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting). Cancer biomarkers (e.g., PSA, CEA, etc.), immune cells and inflammatory markers, and albumin and ammonia levels will also be included. Measures of effect Relative risks and mean differences
