- Title
- The efficacy of aloe vera gel and cream to prevent and to treat radiodermatitis in women with breast cancer: a systematic review
- Review Question
- Are aloe vera creams and/or gels efficacious in preventing and treating the onset of radiodermatitis in women with irradiated breast tissue for cancer?
- Study Type Included
- We will include randomised and non-randomised clinical trials to assess the beneficial effects of the treatments.
- Condition Being Studied
- Radiodermatitis associated with the irradiation of breast tissue due to cancer.
- Participant
- Women with breast cancer requiring radiotherapy. Patients <18 years of age, males, animals, and patients with cancers other than breast tumors.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Interventions against radiodermatitis aimed at prevention or treatment. The management of radiodermatitis is very important to avoid interrupting treatment, improving the therapeutic benefit of radiotherapy, reducing morbidity, reducing the risk of infection and preventing or mitigating skin lesions and scars caused by radiation. Aloe vera has long been promoted for the treatment of a wide variety of skin diseases, and as such, it has been used for more than 1,000 years in Greece, Egypt, India, Mexico, Japan and China. In today's medical practice, different aloe vera-based creams have been tested in some studies to prevent or treat skin lesions secondary to radiation therapy, and the symptoms associated with them, and in fact, aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic and skin regenerating effects, which have been well described in the literature.
- Comparator Control
