- Title
- Biological properties of terpinolene evidenced by in silico, in vitro and in vivo tests: a systematic review.
- Review Question
- What are the biological activities of terpinolene demonstrated through in silico, in vitro, and in vivo assays? Context and rationale Terpinolene is a 10-carbon monoterpene widely found in the chemical composition of aromatic plants, the biological properties and potential use of this compound in preclinical studies (in silico, in vitro, and in vivo) are still poorly explored, making it difficult to therapeutic application, or promotes indiscriminate use if it has a toxic profile. Through this systematic review, we will seek to evidence the therapeutic or toxic potential of terpinolene described in the literature, in order to avoid replication of existing experiments, it will contribute to new research at the most different levels of research (clinical or preclinical).
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: The study was performed in silico, in vitro, or in vivo; Exclusion criteria: Clinical studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: Articles with in silico, in vitro and in vivo tests (including species, route of administration or model, dose and/or concentration tested and model when applicable); Exclusion criteria: Clinical tests.
- Human Disease Modelled
- The review will study several biological activities, not just one disease. We will search all available data in the chosen literature that is suitable for any disease or promoter of human well-being. Examples of actions directly related to human health: Toxicity to human cells, effects related to inflammation, pain, cancer, antioxidant activity. Indirectly: Profile for use in pesticides.
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: The articles use terpinolene isolated (any dosage, concentration and route of administration); Exclusion criteria: Terpinolene in the composition of extracts does not enter the research.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: Placebo, non-exposed control group; Exclusion criteria: No control group to compare with test substance group.
- Main Outcome
- Outcome Measure
- Inclusion criteria: Biological activities (toxic and therapeutic) of terpinolene isolated; Exclusion criteria: Biological activities measured by clinical tests.

- Other Selection Criteria
- Inclusion criteria: Primary (original) research; English language; The articles should discuss the biological activity of terpinolene; The study was performed in silico, in vitro, or in vivo. Exclusion criteria: Review articles; Articles with unavailable full texts; Articles without the chosen descriptors; Articles presenting mixtures of compounds whose activity is not attributed to terpinolene alone (like extracts); Papers that show only clinical studies.
