Condition Being Studied
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease that impacts the lives of many individuals worldwide with a continuously expanding prevalence. It is estimated that about 25 percent of IBD patients are diagnosed between childhood and adolescence. Currently, there is no cure for IBD, however the symptoms are treated using: aminosalicylates, immunomodulators, corticosteroids, biologic agents, and dietary changes. Treatment of IBD aims to induce and maintain clinical remission and mucosal healing prevents complications. Dietary fibres, such as resistant starches (RS) are being investigated as a food-based treatment option for patients with IBD. Hence, resistant starches may be used as an adjuvant to conventional IBD therapy. We have chosen to examine the use of any type of RS in pediatrics and adolescents (population to be studied later in a clinical trial) in order to evaluate the tolerability of RS diet-supplementation. Our previous review focused solely on IBD and there was minimal data available in order to make relevant conclusions on the effects of RS supplementation, which is why we have expanded our target population to any individual (healthy or diseased).

Intervention
We will be including any type of resistant starch (RS1, RS2, RS3, RS4, or RS5).
Comparator Control
The comparator can be either placebo or an alternative diet.
Main Outcome
Primary outcome: Tolerability: Measures of effect Gastrointestinal disturbances from fermentation include: Pain, bloating, increased flatulence, nausea, vomiting, > 3 stools a day, consistency of stools with Bristol stool scale Type 6 (unformed) and Type 7 (watery).
