Title
The color stability of maxillofacial silicones: a systematic review
Review Question
To identify the most color-stable maxillofacial silicone elastomer.
Study Type Included
Inclusion: we are including the articles investigating colour stability of maxillofacial silicones in vitro. Color stability analysis of maxillofacial silicone elastomers against the effect of addition of nanoparticles and opacifiers and exposure like aging factors like human body secretion (sweat and sebum) and environmental factors like ultraviolet radiation, sunlight, dust, weathering. Exclusion: clinical cases, case series, literature reviews, books, reports, letters to the editor, studies with unavailable data.
Condition Being Studied
The color stabilty of maxillofacial silicones, which is affected by addition of pigments, opacifiers, nanoparticles, and various human and environmental factors, hence all these domains will be studied. Extensive research done in the past failed to identify a single “ideal” maxillofacial prosthetic material that can withstand impact of different human and environmental conditions on color changes and stability. Maxillofacial silicones currently used in Asian countries are known to last only for 6 to 24 months and may need replacement thereafter. Even in the retention period their physical properties may change and result in color changes and stability. It has been hypothesized that addition of nano particles to maxillofacial silicones may prove beneficial for patients, but confirmatory evidence in humans is still lacking. Convincing evidence may be made available from prospective, randomized controlled trials only. However, it would not be ethical to expose patients to such interventions directly with in vivo studies. Retrospective evaluation with in vitro studies may be appropriate and feasible option for testing effects of addition of nano particles to maxillofacial silicones as a basis for gathering further clinical evidence.
Participant
All studies investigating colour stability of maxillofacial silicones (in vitro) and the effects of the addition of various nanoparticle pigments
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Maxillofacial silicon elastomers pigmented/ modified with nanoparticles and exposed to environmental and human aging conditions.
Comparator Control
Comparisons will be made between the colour stability of unpigmented and unexposed (control) maxillofacial silicones.
Main Outcome
Color changes in maxillofacial materials caused by incorporation of opacifiers and nanoparticles and aging conditions like sweat and sebum and sunlight, humidity, temperature. Measures of effect Colour stability measured by either quantitative outcome (lab parameters) using reflectance spectrometer in terms of ΔE will be considered or qualitative outcome using visual method (subjective parameters). Specifically measuring the effect measure like duration of stability, reduction in grade of color change after addition of nano-particles etc.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
None. Measures of effect None
Study Method
Epidemiologic, Intervention, Systematic review
