Title
Scopolamine in the treatment of major depressive disorder: protocol of a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
Is scopolamine(I) effective and safe in the treatment of major depressive disorder(P)? Is scopolamine as useful or more useful than conventional therapy(C)?
Study Type Included
This study will include randomised controlled trials (RCTs) without restriction of publication type.
Condition Being Studied
Depression is a common mental illness with high rates of disability, suicide and recurrence. The Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 reported that depression ranks first in the global burden of mental illness. At present, depression is primarily treated with antidepressants, while it still have some adverse effects, and may increase the suicidal tendency. In recent years, scopolamine,as a newly discovered rapid antidepressant, has been studied in the treatment of depression. However, its efficacy and safety have not yet reached a definitive conclusion. Therefore, this research is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the scopolamine for depression using the method of systematic review and meta-analysis.
Participant
The participants should meet the diagnosis of major depressive disorder in accordance with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5) and/or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), regardless of their degree and possible complications. There is no limitation in their genders, races and regions.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
All available dose and treatment modality of scopolamine performed in MDD will be considered as interventions.
Comparator Control
The control group received placebo treatment.
Main Outcome
1. Reduction in the severity of depressive symptoms measured by self-rating or examiner-rating scales. 2. Safety evaluated by the percentage of patients who withdrew from the trials because of adverse events and the severity.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Response rate.
