- Title
- Effects of sugar consumption on oral and general health - a umbrella-review
- Review Question
- 1. Is sugar consumption a risk factor for different diseases displayed in systematic reviews and meta-analyses?
- Study Type Included
- Included are systematic reviews and meta-analyses that address the effects of sugar consumption. Any literature that is not in the form of a systematic review or meta-analysis or is not written in German or English is excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- The main cause of deaths today is due to lifestyle factors such as diet (Unwin and Alberti 2006). The Western diet, which is characterised by high sugar and (refined) carbohydrate content, pro-inflammatory fats (e.g. omega-6 fatty acids) and low fibre content, is a major contributor (Myles 2014; Cordain et al. 2005; Francis and Stevenson 2013; Wölber 2020). A substantially component of the Western Diet is the consumption of processed carbohydrates (also known as free sugars). Sugar is the most influential factor in the development of caries (World Health Organization 2015) and also a risk factor in the development of other non-communicable diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and chronic respiratory diseases. Sugar consumption appears to be an important common risk factor for various diseases. The current planned systematic review aims to summarize all available study outcomes of systematic reviews with regard to all health consequences.
