- Title
- Sugar cane and vector borne disease: a systematic review of their associations and vector control method effectiveness
- Review Question
- To create an overview of the associations of sugar cane production with vector borne disease in different areas of the world.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: Case-control, cross-sectional, cohort studies, and retrospective studies will all be included as they may provide insight to different layers which this review is interested in. Study sited will be sugar plantations, sugar cane mills, or irrigation systems dedicated to sugar crops. Exclusion criteria: Studies which evaluate the effects of crops other than sugar on vector borne disease. Studies where control methods are centered around mass drug administration interventions.
- Condition Being Studied
- Reviews of the associations between vector borne diseases and other water intensive crops, such as rice, have already taken place. The role of sugar cane production on vector borne diseases in sugar cane growing communities have not yet been assessed. Nor has the effectiveness of vector control efforts in sugar cane producing areas been reviewed.
- Participant
- Children and adults living in areas within proximity to sugar cane farming or irrigation systems related to sugar cane farming.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The primary exposure we are interested in is working or living near sugar cane plantations or processing facilites. Studies which evaluate vector borne diseases in rice cultivation areas will be excluded.
- Comparator Control
- Comparators will be study areas which are not near sugar cane producing areas. Studies with areas which include irrigation systems used for other agricultural practices other than sugar cane production.
- Main Outcome
- Inclusion criteria: Primary outcomes (at least one must be included): -Adult vector densities, quantified by human biting rates, or trapping (relative to vector borne disease of interest) -Entomological inoculation rates for malaria -Malaria incidence (either through active or passive case detection) -Dengue incidence (either through active or passive case detection) -Chagas Incidence (either through active or passive case detection). Exclusion criteria: None of the primary outcomes are included. Measures of effect For incidence measures rate ratios will be calculated.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Outcomes for evaluation of the effectiveness of vector control methods in sugar producing areas: -Larval densities -Adult vector densities, quantified by human biting rates, or trapping (relative to vector borne disease of interest). Measures of effect Risk or odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals will be reported for dicotomous outcomes.
