- Title
- Occupational Exposure to Benzene and incidence and mortality for solid cancers
- Review Question
- Is there an association between human exposure to benzene and solid cancers risk?
- Study Type Included
- Observational: cohort-studies and nested case-control studies
- Condition Being Studied
- Solid cancers without focus on non-solid tumors including leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
- Participant
- Adult members of occupational cohorts, all countries.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA We include workers exposed to benzene in industries and occupations in which benzene is a major source of exposure. EXCLUSION CRITERIA We exclude studies: 1- Community-based studies, whether of cohort or case-control design, in which exposure to benzene is assessed across a wide variety of industries and occupations, mostly in the absence of exposure data. 2- The study focuses on occupational studies (among workers) and excludes other types of sample sizes and sources of benzene exposure. 3- Studies involving blood samples and tissue are excluded. 4- Studies do not measure the association between benzene and outcome. 5- Studies on non-solid tumors including leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
- Comparator Control
- The controls will be those with a lower benzene exposure
- Main Outcome
- Incidence and mortality of solid cancers. Measures of effect Incidence (Risk Ratios (RRs) for cohort studies and Odds Ratios (ORs) for nested case-control studies and their 95% CI) Mortality (SMR)
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Additional outcomes will be to investigate the association by stratified according to another related factors such as smoking, gender, histological type, BMI, geographical location , and etc. Measures of effect Incidence (Risk Ratios (RRs) for cohort studies and Odds Ratios (ORs) for nested case-control studies and their 95% CI) Mortality (SMR)
