Review Question
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of rhubarb combined with a trypsin inhibitor for severe acute pancreatitis (SAP).
Study Type Included
Inclusion: (1) Randomized controlled trials (RCTs); (2) Studies including patients diagnosed as having severe acute pancreatitis, based on generally accepted criteria; (3) Studies in which rhubarb has been combined with an essential therapy, and compared with the essential therapy as a control; (4) Outcome measurements: mortality, overall efficacy, length of hospitalization, rate of complications, abdominal pain relief time, first defecation time, and serum amylase levels. Exclusion:  (1) Reviews, non-clinical studies, non-RCTs and case observation studies;  (2) Controlled interventions involving other TCM therapies such as Chinese herbs or acupuncture.
Condition Being Studied
Severe acute pancreatitis, as treated using rhubarb combined with trypsin inhibitor.
Participant
Patients diagnosed as having severe acute pancreatitis, based on generally accepted criteria.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The administration of rhubarb combined with trypsin inhibitor, including somatostatin, ulinastatin, stilamin, and octreotide.
Comparator Control
Control: trypsin inhibitor administration only (including somatostatin, ulinastatin, stilamin, and octreotide).
Main Outcome
Mortality; The overall efficacy of the treatment.  Measures of effect Both outcomes are dichotomous variables, and will be presented using odds ratio (OR) assessments, with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Length of hospitalization, rate of complications, abdominal pain relief time, first defecation time, and serum amylase levels.  Measures of effect All outcomes are continuous variables, and will be presented as mean differences (MD), with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).
Study Method
